How difficult is it to set up and maintain a salt water aquarium?

If youve been keeping freshwater for a while, the saltwater switch is intimidating. I kept freshwater for about 7 years, and I finally switched. Let me tell you. lmao. Im disappointed I didnt switch over ealier.

As long as you research everything, and do it right the first time, everything will go smoothly. The problems come when you do something wrong, and have to try to fix it, only to make it worse. You just need to keep up on water changes though. Saltwater creatures are generally very sensitive to bad water. You are probably better off buying test kits as someone mentioned above for just about everything. That way if something starts looking bad, you can test and find out whats going on.

The big difference is cost. Youll need a protein skimmer, which is between 50-200 bucks depending on your size of tank. Youll need a powerhead or two, which each one would be 40-150 bucks. Youll need between 1-2 pounds of live rock per gallon, and that costs between 4.99-6.99 a pound.

Salt water aquarium question?

I’m planning on setting up a small salt water aquarium, its a 10 gallon tank, i only plan on having a few saltwater plants and 1 small fish in there, ik i need something to convert the water to saltwater but i dont know what i need? other than that and a filter what do i need?

Here you go… Use Instant Ocean Reef Crystals. I service aquariums and find this salt mix good to be a nice mix between good cost and good salt. Get a good light, look for power compacts, T5 fixtures, or LEDs. LEDs being the best, T5’s being second, and PCs being the worse. Any other lighting would not work well on a tank like this. A good filter for a small saltwater tank would be a Hagen Aquaclear. Get the Aquaclear 70. It is big enough that it will work best and provide enough flow in the tank. Add live sand, a few pieces of live rock, and buy some plants, maybe a small coral, and through in a fish. If you have a tight fitting lid, I like flame fish or fire goby they are called. A clown goby works, and small shrimp gobies, a six line wrasse, a silver or spine cardinalfish, a neon goby, an ocellaris clown. These are all good candidates for a 10g tank.

Do water changes often on 10 gallon tank, like 3 – 4 gallons every week if you can. Do not need skimmer if this is done, small tank makes it hard to get a skimmer on there.

Use a turkey baster to lift any detritus up and clean out rocks and crevices. Clean filter at least once a month, clean impeller and change carbon and sponge, and rinse off the bio-media.

If you follow this you, should have an ice tank.

Setting up a Saltwater Aquarium?

My family wants to set up a salt water aquarium and we were wanting to know what all do you need to buy, and about how much will all of this stuff cost? What all do you have to do to maintain a good tank? What types of fish can live together? Please and thanks
We had a fresh water tank for a good 3 years or so and we want to convert it to a saltwater tank. We already have a 75 gallon tank.

If your a beginner i honestly wouldn’t get a saltwater tank. They are very hard to do and keep up with. But if you really want to most saltwater fish are over 20 bucks and not cheap. Most saltwater fish are also big so you will need to pick up at least a 30 gallon tank. They can be a bit pricey but they are around 130 bucks for a starter kit. You will also need aquarium salt as well. Your looking at starting off around 250 dollars with everything included. Even more. You will need to let the tank cycle for 2 weeks before you buy any fish. You will need to do 25% water changes each week as well which can be a pain considering that you have to make new saltwater and add it. So as i said before it takes a lot of work and if your a beginner do not start a saltwater or brackish water as they are very hard. A 15-20 gallon fresh water tank is good for beginners.
