Salt Water Aquarium Tips and Tutorials

How can i cool my reef tank without a chiller, and how do i keep my metal halide running cooler? ?

ui have a 125 Gallon reef tank and i have three MH lamps installed in my canopy but they heat the water up too much. I don’t want to buy different lights or invest in a chiller. What can i do??

Evaporation cooling can be done cheaply, but you’ll still likely need to put some distance between the water and the light. A fan or two across the tank’s surface will keep the heat constantly moving out of the tank as water evaporates.

unfortunately your best bet would be to invest in a chiller. perhaps it’s possible to raise the MH lights a little higher above the aquarium? that way maybe some of the heat would disperse rather than to all go into the aquarium.
