Salt Water Aquarium Tips and Tutorials

What should I put in a new reef tank?

My dad and I are starting a salt water reef tank and I want to have a few fish or something else in there as well. I thought a tomato clown fish would work nice but what else? A star fish maybe? What should I put in to start off the tank for the reef that won’t die if it does not have too much going on. It’s a 20 gallon tank, and we have a good budget to work with.

to start you want to build up your cleaner crew and let the tank cycle. you dont want to add coral too soon. so id say start with a few of these at a time, nassarius snails, mexican turbo snails, maybe an emerald crab, peppermint shrimp, and skunk cleaner shrimp. If you really want fish to add to a new tank that you plan to make a reef id say go with green chromis to start. They like to be kept in a small school and are reef safe and will be compatable with anything else that can go in the reef later. Other fish that you may want to add later as the tank become more mature could be mandarin goby, algae blenny, percula clownfish, dwarf angels, a few species of the smaller wrasse’s may also work well, and firefish. Its a pretty small setup so obviously dont add all of these i listed just giving a few possibilities. Some may work better than others in such a small tank but if you limit the ammount of fish you can get away with one of the larger species i mentioned but not have as many fish. My personal favorite is the pajama cardinal i love that fish (its got personality to make up for its looks). if you want to email me i will be more than willing to help with any other questions you may have. If you want to check out my reef to get some ideas here is the link. Hope this helps and good luck with the tank. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nanoreef

What is the difference in a mini reef aquarium and a coral tank? Is it the same thing?

tomato clown works, it is a small tank though and are going to be very limited on what you can put it there. You can try something in the basslet or dottyback family, like a strawberry psuedochromis or an orchid dottyback, damsels will also work, or a dwarf angel. I do not suggest putting any type of tang or butterfly, the tank is too small. I also suggest picking up Marine Fishes by Scott Michael its a very good handheld guide. As far as inverts go be very careful with starfish, many types will eat small fish. A good thing to start with is cleaner shrimp, they do well in a captive environment
