Do you plan on making it a reef tank or a FOWLR tank? If it is a reef tank then you will need all the proper chemicals, ex. calcium and carbonate. Also proper lighting is need to maintain corals. Do not get into salt water tanks unless you plan on spending a lot of money. Check out these videos of nano salt water tanks.

To get an idea of the amount you need to spend, i'll post a link for supplies for a 10 gallon, then you can see for yourself how much it will cost you and make a wise decision on whether you want to go salt water or not. I have 2 nano tanks and it costs me a good piece of change to keep them running.
References :
Videos: http://www.nycoralfrags.com/apps/videos/

The smaller the harder to manage. If you're going with this tank start with only a couple of fish for a month or so before you get any more.

good luck.
References :
Not at all. I've used a 14 gallon BioCube to setup a small, three fish (and whatever invertebrates hatched out of the live rock I put in.
References :
I think if you're careful, that tank size wouldn't be an issue.
