putting sand/gravil in a salt water aquarium?
ok im having alot of trouble finding ”live sand” for my nano reef could i use ordinary sand and wash it /boil it thoroughly would that work ??
what do you mean by ordinary.sand box sand?is there any salt water fish stores near you?if you can’t find live sand then you probably can’t find live rock.a decent product is in a bag called caribsea direct.or natures ocean live sand.once live sand or rock is added over time the animal life on and in these colonize everything.pet smart carries the caribsea stuff.and dead base rock.plus salt and some suppliments food and supplies.or you can order it online.or better yet,don’t use it use rock only.

yes as long as you can get a hold of live rock…it will seed the sand

salt water substrate NEEDS to be made of calcium,
so no you cant just go to home depot and get any old sand,

Go the the fish store and get arogonite sand. Just plain old aragonite sand. DO not get the live sand or be talked into "live sand" It is a waste of time and money and rumors have it being linked to cyano bacteria out breaks. Regular old calcium based arogonite sand is sold at most fish stores. It will get seeded from your live rock in a matter of days.
